There are many things in this life that we have to contend with. Some are beyond our control. Growing older, natural disasters and death are but a few. The longer we live, the more of them we are likely to encounter. Wisdom demands that we do well to prepare to meet these scenarios with the best possible advantage.

The book of Proverbs is replete with sagacious advice that can help us with many of the challenges that we will face and need to be prepared for. Marriage, employment, finances, disasters and so on. The sayings in Proverbs are especially advantageous for but not only for the young. They should be read often by all.

Many are prepped for college, for military service, marriage, child-bearing and parenting. We are prepped for jobs, home ownership, disasters/emergencies, retirement and even for death. Since the last two hurricanes in the territory, we have come to realize (again) the need to prepare for hurricanes. Be sure to prepare adequately and also encourage others to prepare as well.

There is a tale about a wealthy monarch and his court jester whom he had declared to be the most foolish person he had ever met. One day after recovering from a fit of laughter owing to the antics of the jester he issued a challenge. He gave his scepter to the jester and challenged him to roam the kingdom and endeavor to find someone who was a bigger fool than himself. The jester embarked upon his quest with little success. Some months later he received word that the king had fallen gravely ill and desired to  see his dear little jester. He hurried back to the palace and made his way to his beloved king. He visited with his old friend and after tearful greetings they engaged in conversation. The jester asked the king if he was prepared. The king assured the jester that he was and proceeded to tell him about the details of his funeral, the successor to the throne and other essential matters. The jester pressed the king with questions about the afterlife. The king looked puzzled and eventually admitted that he had not made preparations for the “afterlife”. The jester solemnly proceeded to place the royal scepter into the king’s hand and intimated to him with tears that he was the biggest fool in the kingdom. ~source unknown.

It is appointed unto men once to die and after that the judgment (Hebrews 9:27). Prepare to meet thy God (Amos 4:12). The song writer inquires: “Are you ready, are you ready, are you ready for the judgment day?” There was a wise old lady whom we loved to converse with who had a saying based on 2 Corinthians 5:10,“Whether you’re prepared or you’re unprepared, you must appear (before the judgment seat of Christ). Let us be wise and prepared not only for things temporal but also for things eternal.

“He died that we might be forgiven.

He died to make us good.

That we might go at last to heaven,

Saved by His precious blood.” – Ms. Cecil F. Alexander
