Children getting ready for a new school year can be stressful. The thought of meeting a new teacher, following new classroom/school rules, making new friends, rigorous school work and demands of your time can be challenging.
Grandparents can help their grandchildren by being that listening ear and providing support. We can also help by teaching them organizational skills as well as how to take control of their emotions. Listed below are a group of ideas that grandparents can implement to help them be successful in the upcoming school year.
- Start preparing for the new school year during the summer time.
- Let them work on various subjects that includes reading, math, and writing. Be sure to make it fun. A trip to the supermarket can be exciting and educational.
- Give them different scenarios and allow them to tell you what they heard you say in their own words.
- Teach them math skills by using real monies.
- Taking them to the department store to shop, a restaurant to order their own meal, a trip to my piggy bank, and eventually a real bank can prepare them in so many ways.
- Change their bedtime and get them back in a routine.
- Allow them to pick out their own school supplies so that they can gain a sense of ownership.
- Build their communication skills by asking them questions daily.
- Make sure they are ahead of the grade level they’re entering.
- Praise them daily.
- Make sure that they know they are loved and they are special.
- Stimulate their minds nutritionally, spiritually, and mentally.
Not only will this lead to a successful school year it will also lead to a well-rounded, strong, and caring individual.
