My day started out as a regular day. I announced to my children, adults, that “I’m getting a regular mammogram today, then I will spend the rest of my day relaxing.” I felt quite happy, because after 17 years of doing mammos /sonograms this would be my first regular mammogram. I had my test done very efficiently; it took me less than 5 minutes to realize that the technician was not happy with what she saw. The questions came rapidly; did you use any lotions or powder on your skin before coming to the test?
To make a long story short, my 11am appointment ended at 5pm. After numerous tests, consultations and questions, I was diagnosed with DCIS (Ductal Carcinoma Insitu). The area was so extended that mastectomy was recommended. I was scheduled for a biopsy. My initial reaction was disbelief, then anger. I had not felt any lumps; all I had noticed was a rash beneath the breast. That was promptly diagnosed as a simple fungal infection from too much moisture and it was easily remedied.
I had my biopsy done a few days later after the mammogram. I was blessed to be able to get the latest state of the art needle core biopsy at Moffitt Cancer Center, located in Tampa Florida. Everything was quick and professional. This was December of 2017. After numerous consultations, pre-op teaching, clearances was given for the surgery in March 2018.
Today September 2018, 6 months later, I am very grateful. My cancer was at stage 0 – I needed the mastectomy, but no chemo or radiation was needed. I am grateful to God first, modern technology, great surgeons, patient care givers, occupational therapist and every nurse that came to my home daily to help with my care. Post-surgery, I had an allergic reaction to the tape, therefore my sutures fell off and recovery was different than expected. No gruesome details needed.
Life is beautiful, I am more than my eye, or breast, life is great. To my classmates that have cancer, have had cancers, whether it is breast or something else, recovering from cancer- don’t give up. Thank the Almighty for every day, live healthy, forgive, be positive, be human, laugh. God loves us with all our imperfections, again, life is beautiful. On a sober note, we will all die. Someday, ask yourself. Am I ready? (for more information 340-514-8116)
